I'm told that Dan Bates and Rick Basehore have progressed from a screened final round. The committee then took the decision to have these two players split a 1-year probationary contract for next season, and following that process, one of them will be chosen for the permanent position.

While it certainly sounds bizarre to have two players share a 1-year, bear in mind this is not a full-time orchestra. According to their website the National Philharmonc will present just 10 programs in their 23-24 season, so this is essentially just a prolonged trial process.
